While we are delighted that Inside The Bell Jar has resonated well with writers from the mental health community, we are saddened by the lack of submissions from people of colour, and those from the LGBTQA+ communities.
Cathy’s Comps & Calls is unique in that it lists completely free-to-enter writing competitions and calls for submissions, which is absolutely fantastic if you are wanting to send out your writing to multiple sites.

Here at Inside The Bell Jar, we wanted to create a project for World Suicide Prevention Day that would reflect the reality of mental illness in its rawest form. Honesty and expression through art and fiction is something we’ve always aspired to achieve though our journal, and this project is no different. We invited duo photographer Debbie Deboo and model/activist Felicity McKee to join us for our first ever visual project, which we are calling ‘I Am Not Afraid to Scream’, a stunning collection of photography, painting, poetry and prose.

Due to an unexpected number of submissions for our first issue, we have decided to bring the closing date for submissions forward. This gives us a chance to ensure that each and every piece gets a fair chance when it comes to making the difficult decision of which submissions to publish.
